Urban vibrancy — the dynamic activity of humans in urban environments — is shaped by a complex interplay of urban features, social conditions, and demographic factors. This paper investigates how urban vibrancy varies between genders and what this implies for gender segregation within cities.

Using Call Detail Record data across the seven largest cities in Italy, we find consistent differences in urban vibrancy between males and females, significantly influenced by ‘Points of Interest’ and transport networks. A spatial modelling approach reveals both positive and negative spillovers across urban features, highlighting how accessibility and opportunity shape gender-specific urban experience.
